On Friday, May 9th beginning at 9:00am till 2:00pm, over 300 Northfield 6th graders celebrated Minnesota's 150 years of statehood with a project called "All Things Minnesota". These enthusiastic 6th graders painted over 100 windows at their school, with themes such as the Mighty Mississippi, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Fires of 1918 and even our state flower and butterfly to name just a few.

It was an undertaking of enormous proportion, but also of enormous significance as we celebrate this important milestone in our state's history.

Community invited to annual International Festival this weekend

Carleton College will celebrate its 11th Annual International Festival on Saturday, May 17 in the Great Space of the Sayles Hill Campus Center. The International Festival has become a Carleton tradition that grows stronger and bigger each year. Taking place from 2 to 4 p.m., this year’s festival will feature a spectacular range of international cuisine, music, performances, activities, and information tables. The celebration is free and the public is invited to attend.

The theme for the festival this year is One Love. “The idea is that International Festival is a time for all of Carleton to come together and celebrate the rich backgrounds of all our students. It is a time for us to be one,” explains Ken Geiger ’09, one of the main student coordinators of the event.

Earlier this week, Carey Tinkelenberg, Director and Founder of the Northfield Skating School and Gene Uenishi, Webmaster and Skating Instuctor, gave a presentation entitled “Using Modern Technology to Enhance Your Program” at the North American Rink Conference and Expo (NARCE) in Chicago. Invited by US Figure Skating Headquaters, we presented at our second conference of the spring on the necessity of having a website, the features and ease of creating a Wordpress site, and the impact our website has had on our program. We left our fellow directors with a step-by-step guide and resources for creating sites of their own. We uploaded this photo as a demo during the presentation. Special thanks to Michael Blaha of Organic Arts for creating and hosting our site!

William “Bill” Hauer, 86, of Shakopee, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Shakopee.

Visitation will be on Friday, May 16, from 5-8 p.m. at the McNearney Funeral Home, Shakopee.

Memorial Mass is Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Shakopee.
